My new project!

I know I can be a little impulsive but sometimes you just have to jump in with both feet. That’s what I did last week and now I’m the proud owner of a little cabin at the coast! Am a firm believer in fate and when I spotted it for sale on a local market place website I just had to go and take a look and the rest, as they say, is history.

Obviously it needs a little work, the previous owners have had it for ten years, it’s clear it has seen some good times and has made a lot of memories. Now it’s time to make some new memories.

The owners sold it as is, with all the contents, lock, stock and barrel so since picking up the keys on Thursday I have been in clearing it out. Not easy for a hoarder like me who looks at everything and thinks “ooh that might come in handy” so I gave myself a strict set of rules – chuck, give to charity, keep, recycle.

I’ve been pretty ruthless and am now down to the bare bones in the living and dining areas. I can’t do much renovation other than a lick of paint this year as it is now high season and no one wants to come on holiday and be next to a building site. That said it doesn’t need that much remedial work more some remodelling to make a better use of space. My brilliant lucky find so far is that lurking underneath the tired blown vinyl wallpaper, which I was just going to give a coat of paint, I found the original wood planking external walls in fine fettle. Which means I shall be trying my hand at a lime wash finish to give it that beach house look.

The cabin is located on a lovely family run campsite on the edge of L’Estartit resort on the Costa Brava, surrounded by countryside it has a real rural feel with visitors that come back year after year. The site has a restaurant at the entrance, a lovely big pool with childrens pool, cafĂ© bar, and all the usual conveniences that you would expect to find on a well run campsite.

There is a mixture of accommodation, privately owned cabins and static caravans, tourers that are brought on to site for longer periods, tourers and motorhomes that come for a couple of weeks, campers with every tent type you can imagine. I love the buzz of a campsite with its back to nature feel of a simpler time, it brings back happy childhood memories of caravan holidays on the North West coast, North Wales and Anglesey.

As I left yesterday the field in front of me was starting to fill up with summer visitors and I expect when I go back I will be parking the car next to the cabin and not under the tree! Hope you will stick with me on this new adventure and let me know what you think.
